Firefox lately seems to be regularly the causing the crash of the Desktop on E64 beta

Firefox lately seems to be regularly the causing the crash of the Desktop on E64 beta . Leaving the display with a scrambled pixlated shapes look which progresses to a frozen PC. A cold reboot is required to recover. The problem seems to be related to the docker when you try to reduce the number of virtual screens from the default four to one using the docker. Thats when the whole system freezes

Do you think you can find anything in Xorg.log?

See if "grep EE /var/log/Xorg*" gives anything useful.

.

I get the error msg

grep: /var/log/Xorg: No such file or directory

Mind the * or use TAB to autocomplete.
You've got Xorg.0.log, Xorg.0.log.old, Xorg.1.log and Xorg.1.log.old

Should i do the grep immediately after the Desktop freezes?

otherwise this is the log output:

grep EE /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old

Well Xorg.0.log.old would be 2 session start-ups back.

I only see a caught bug related to the touchpad, I doubt that would be causing the crashes you describe.

It actually related to the touchpad and mouse. They both hang when the issue occurs. The only program where this problem occurs is when i am using firefox. A similar issue is when i try to reduce the virtual desktops from the default 4 to 1 . I get a similar hanging but its temporary

Just had the crash occur again and this is the xorg log

~ ❯❯❯ grep EE /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old
(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.

I don't think Xorg.log comes with anything useful.

Check syslog i.e "/var/log/syslog" and see what the kerenl errors were just prior to your reboot.

n.b.
If syslog doesn't go back far enough, there's syslog.1 before it and before that there's compressed versions which will require a z prefix, i.e "zless" or "zcat" to read. :smile_cat:

/var/log/syslog or syslog.1 are also generally unhelpful. There is no error worth posting. Trouble i am having is replicating the crash . It seems to come randomly. Will try to get a screen grab next time. As well as get the logs as soon as it occurs again . Otherwise thanks for the suggestions

Syslog does not show errors in the same fashion as Xorg but ......
The nice thing about syslog is that it keeps time in a human readable form.
So you look up the moment just before the restart after a crash/freeze.

If there's no report there, one can start looking at FF itself as the culprit albeit that I personally never had any problems with it myself.
