Hi! Thank you for your kind words and welcome to the forum! :smiley14:

Yep, same. Used to be a Mac user for years. But then I discovered open source.

Are you using the Stable or Beta version of Elive? It helps a lot to know.

Hello!

Supposing you are on x386 hardware?
Elive stable?
Else you can use Elive beta x64, witch is 'as stable', at least in the way that it's already "rock solid" beside the fact that as a beta, it's in evolution, but Enlightenment E16 is here for now less tuned than on "stable", witch use E17...
Elive beta 32bits is on same condition as x64...

Salutations!

Bonjour @TheTechRobo & @Franc & to all readers...
This might help u ???:

Kernel Linux 5.7.0-0.bpo.2-686 (i686)
Version #1 SMP Debian 5.7.10-1~bpo10+1 (2020-07-30)
C Library GNU C Library / (Debian GLIBC 2.28-10) 2.28
Distribution Elive GNU/Linux (on Debian buster)

My gess is that i have Elive beta 32bits BUT i'm running it on a 64 !
Is there a way to upgrade to a stable 64 install without erasing all the settings & copies i
already did ?
Hopefully i have 3 external hdd backups (ext4)
Nice day and many thanks for help...
Fred

Yes, you just boot up on the amd64 live version and it'll see that it can cross-grade to x64 and ask you if you want that.
It works fine keeping passwords, etc and retaining backup versions of i.e your .e16 settings file. :magick:

The cross-grade install will open with the pristine e16 settings again (so as not to import possible earlier mis-configutations) but all your previous settings are backed up.
You might lose some apps you installed yourself, certainly if they don't have a x64 counterpart ..... so make a note of those.

Many thanks @triantares... I'll try AFTER coffee ! !
& might enjoy a walk in this frozen countryside :))

>>> uname -r
4.19.0-13-amd64

Cross-grading seems ok BUT no way to install latest "Mullvad" using GDebi...
:confounded:
Ideas ?
Fred...& nice day !

Well the installer should've given a reason why not but ...... gdebi has issues in that it doesn't call "gksu" anymore in the gui interface....so if it didn't ask for a sudo password, then that is the problem.

  • If I heard correctly there are some safety issues with "gksu" of late.

So try installing from the CommandLine using a sudo prefix i.e "sudo gdebi Mullvani" , where you'll have to either give the full path to where the Mulvani.deb file is or "cd" into that directory before issueing that command.

..so if it didn't ask for a sudo password, then that is the problem...

Well the thing did not ask for a password...
I'll try another way -i'll keep u informed-
Quite sure i'm not the only one to struggle !
Thanks for caring
Fred
