Are you booting using the ISO or IMG? Which ISO/IMG?
elive_3.0.6_stable_usb.img
Have you verified the md5 to make sure your download isn't corrupt? How to verify the MD5 of your downloaded ISOs
I haven't tried qemu on Elive, so frankly I'm just adding my 2 cents here in the hope it might lead to something.
I noticed that "virtualbox" will not use the stable.img either (a USB thingy) ..... it required me to make a .vmdk file for it.
So maybe it's worthwhile to try the hybrid.iso instead or use a similar approach in qemu.
How can I downlad the hybrid.iso?
In case of Stable, you download the DVD (which is an iso file) version from the same link as where you got the USB .img
