This distro is severely hobbled by donation gating of the downloads

Hello,

I am trying about 20 or so linux distro to find which I like.
I used to use enlightenment back in 1999 and so I recognized the name and elive is one of the distros I wanted to try.

But you want my email for a download, and a 1 hour pointless wait AND when I put in an address and name, it said I'm a bot ?!

You know, all the other distros it's easy, either it's a 404 errors on their page, or it's a link that immediately downloads the ISO file.

I created this account just to tell you this.

I won't be creating another account on the next linux distro that makes me jump any more hoops just to try the damned thing and for now I'm giving you a pass

maybe next time !

I find this very problematic too, and it makes Elive very hard to recommend to anyone. Also when receiving notifications emails about new version of Elive, when clicking the link it then appears to be only a "Beta" release and the version numbers are confusing.

Then there are things like "This version includes the best experience" for 32-bit Elive (?)

What about the Download page? It does not include the version numbers at all and the choice between these all can be very confusing IMO. 32 is at the the top, but then again a version including both 32 and 64 bit is there (but only Beta; so not ready yet as people perceive Beta) .

I wish the things were simply more clear and obvious for Elive. People will donate if they have a great experience (and understanding from the start).

Surprisingly nobody mentions "Retrowave" which is free to download, without any hoops to jump through, waiting time, nor is it designated "Beta" ... and available in 32 and 64bit versions.

So @shodan : Just download Retrowave and try that if you want it, fast and easy. If you do decide to support the building of Elive, well that's exactly why Beta asks for donation.
Also be aware that hosting a server for downloads costs money and that a free and easy download is not an entitlement, it's a privilege someone else is paying for.

@LinusTheBossFinn if recommending Elive to others: Use Retrowave for that, for the above mentioned reasons.....It's stable as can be and very nicely themed to boot. :happy_dance:

I agree, it's totally confusing .... Stable should be designated for what it is: "Out of Date/Old" and "Beta" is indeed a total misnomer for a release as stable as E16 can ever become.
