I'm wondering how to make the animations on the desktop as simple as possible or turn them off totally?
I have a netbook 1gb and need all the ram I can get.

You can try to uninstall unwanted things (that easy from the installer), like services or daemons
The default wallpaper of Elive takes a bit of ram, not much, but if you use a much simpler one it will take less ram, so just try to use a static image instead
