3.8.1 beta release

If you upgrade using the latest Elive 3.8.1 live usb. The upgrader will break/delete all your none repo installs , source compilations. Lost all my new arcade games that i use to kill time when source compiling :grimacing:
Triantares recommended using "Elive- Health" instead

No, I recommended "as well" or to logout and back in (which does the same).
Upgrading from the USB (contrary to "apug") will remove all externally derived applications, only those in the standard Buster and Elive repos will be kept (this is a stability/security feature BTW).

Programs to be kept (provide they originate from those repos) can added to the file" "/etc/elive/packages_to_maintain_installed" which is also offered to you during the upgrade cycle using the USB.

Thanks for the correction

my install to asus laptop went without any problems thanks for building a great operating system

Yeah ..... but I never do that in public.
Always in squalid little virtual backrooms like PMs. :rofl2:

Mmh should work, this conf file is set on Live startup and also from the installer. Basically unless you have very low resources, it should be set to terminology, otherwise to urxvt

try "readlink -f" to that /etc file

Not sure if you mean that, but Elive Topaz included a feature where you can download a newer ISO, boot automatically in Live mode from the hard disk (this means, no USB / DVD required to record) by simply rebooting the machine, and even install it over your actual system

That's another hidden feature that Elive had, @triantares @Rebel450 @yoda  :smiley14:

ah! yes, alright, that was the feature explained before, it is actually not implemented / integrated, maybe good to include? but in any case people don't even knows about these features (and so nobody uses them), that's why i said how much important is to write the Features pages, @triantares

repos are removed to keep the system correctly stable, for compiled things it should be maintained (if was installed on /usr/local or /opt) on which dir they was installed instead?

I was refering to the repo installed programs . The files in /opt are fine , just their desktop links are lost.

ok, as @triantares said here 3.8.1 beta release - #22 by triantares you can use that file for the installer to keep them installed

about the .desktop files, on which directory are they installed by default in your compilations?

Most seem to go here /usr/share/applications/ , but some remained in the install folder /opt

Maybe try soft linking those in /opt, assuming they're the ones that don't show up ?
"sudo ln -s /opt/program_name/blabla.desktop /usr/share/applications/blabla.desktop"

Thar means i would have to create a .desktop file specifically for the file blabla.desktop in /usr/share/applications/ then create the symbolic link, no? Feels like the symbolic link would add a lot of actions i would need to remember going later or conflicts . No?

Wouldnt it be better to just insert the file path in the blabla.desktop file in the "exec" field ? Since i lost the old programs i have not bothered to reinstall them.

No, that command creates the symlink. If you create one beforehand you will get a response stating that the file exists and thus a link cannot be created.

The symlink (-s) is used to avoid problems with local paths in the app i.e start an app from it's own directory in stead of just copying over part of it.
