Elive 3.8.46 released

Elive 3.8.46 released

December 22, 2024

The Elive Team is pleased to announce the release of 3.8.46 Our Christmas Gift: After years of waiting for the New Enlightenment desktop E26 in Elive, we have finally started the development and this is the first version that includes it! The desktop is not yet fully ready, it still lacks some integrations with the OS, correct designs, and there are some instabilities in the desktop, but you can already start playing with it! :) However, this should not be a concern, as E16 is still included as the stable option, featuring years of development being integrated correctly in Elive makes it the perfect stable choice for your daily work! This new version includes also:
  • Installer: Numerous fixes and improvements: resolved issues with EFI systems, improved architecture settings for the bootloader, added features to clean up old EFI entries, added an option for swapfile creation, and integrated BTRFS with default transparent real-time compression.
  • Captive Portal Wi-Fi logins implemented from the applications menu
  • Tablet-like Computers: Automatically rotates if the default position is incorrectly set to vertical (E16)
  • Wine: Improved Windows compatibility for application installation.
  • Menus and Applications: Improved organization and cleanup.
  • Desktop: Additional hotkeys for multimedia keyboards and other customization improvements.

That is great news…
I have been waiting for years for a more (stable) updated version (E26). That’s my personal expectation
I know it’s a lot of work :frowning: but you’re doing great. While trying and using the unstable versions of Elive, I had time to switch the stable version of my work Portable Linux to Debian after using some others based on Debian.
Next step…try it before Xmas :snowman_with_snow:

I tried to install it, but I came across a blue screen of death after installation was searching for the automatic internet connection configurations. Then after the blue screen of death went away, the installation came up to the desktop selector, and then the computer shutdown after that. I think it is to do with the blue screen of death. That was with kernel 6.11.05 selected on installation boot up.

I tried to select kernel 6.1, but I got a hd0 error warning (attempted to read outside of hd0) that I should boot the kernel image first. as if the kernel was not there.

So at the moment, I can not install 3.8.46 because of these issues.

To avoid that .... edit the bootloader and add "country=us" (or whatever you want) and it wont search.

That is something that doesn't exist on Linux, that will have been a remnant of the script, i.e 'ncurses' running (but not as it should).

I just did a test-run (where I let it search for language configurations) and everything worked just fine. Maybe you should checksum your .iso.

NB,
I also ran the 6.1 kernel with no issues.

NOTE:
I do have some issues copying the .iso file to a Ventoy USB disk as well as using "dd" to format a flashdrive directly. Both seem to hang indefinitely but eventually do get there. A very big file in there somewhere. :baffled:

So maybe you yanked out your flashdrive before it was written completely .... I know I did the first time and got, sort of the same messages as you did.

After using the E16 version I noticed a few changes that I like…
Detecting the available networks right away is a plus, and the overall configuration seems to be better.
The E26 version has a good feeling even if not everything is working. Yet, that’s a good start.
I need to use it more and often and will install that stable E16 version on a mini pc that still have Mint on it but has no use right now… I will make it useful again with Elive this time

I tried to copy the image to USB and found out that the USB drive is too small. verify failed.

SO I have to get a new USB drive
