Hi everyone,
I’ve been curious about something lately and wanted to hear real experiences from people here.
Has anyone tried using TikTok (web or any unofficial clients) on Linux-based systems and noticed any impact on performance or battery life? I’m mostly interested in whether the browser version feels heavier compared to other short-video platforms, especially in terms of CPU usage, scrolling smoothness, or overall system responsiveness.
On my side, it sometimes feels like continuous scrolling and video preloading can make the browser a bit more resource-heavy, but I’m not sure if that’s just normal behavior for modern web apps or something specific to TikTok’s implementation.
Would be great to know how it behaves for others on different distros or setups, and if there are any tweaks people use to keep it running smoothly without lag or high resource usage.
Just to add a bit more context from my side after testing this further.
I tried TikTok on both Firefox and Chromium, and I’m still noticing relatively higher CPU usage compared to platforms like YouTube Shorts. The infinite scroll and aggressive video preloading seem to keep system resources active most of the time, which also affects battery life during longer sessions.
I also briefly tested some alternative or modified versions people talk about (like TikTok 18–style web variants or third-party builds you sometimes find mentioned on sites like protik18). From what I observed, the performance impact is pretty similar—or in some cases even heavier—since most of them rely on the same web rendering approach or add extra scripts on top.
One thing that helped slightly was keeping hardware acceleration enabled; turning it off actually made playback less smooth and increased CPU load.
At this point, it feels like this is more about how TikTok’s web app is designed rather than a Linux-specific issue. Still, I’m curious if anyone here has managed to optimize it better—maybe through specific browser flags, lightweight browsers, or distro-level tweaks?
