Screen garbled after switch back and forth from console (alt-ctrl-f4 and then alt-ctrl-f1)

Anybody has this problem ? If I go to a console (alt-ctrl-f4), do nothing wait 5 seconds, then the screen become garbled and I can't goback to the console to restart.

Only way out is call omni (alt+esc) and restart graphic env (sudo systemctl isolate rescue and exit).
But I have to type blindly since the screen is not readable anymore.

I run E24, but the same occurs with E16.
***Correction The error occurs only when I'm logged on E24 and not on E16 ***
*** Sorry I was sure to have tried it on E16, but it seem I was wrong. I tried today and I can switch console from E16 without any problem ***** My mistake ;=( ***

As a simple remedy: Can't you simply go to another console or into X witk Ctrl, Alt, F7 ?
And rebooting in a VT is as easy as hitting Crl, Alt, Del .... no typing required.

Or .... do "startx -- :1" in the TTY4 to have a second instance of E24 running on F8. :magick:

I cannot replicate what's happening there but I am running an older kernel (5.7.0).

  • I definitely need to upgrade the kernel.

BTW,
Are you already logged in or not on F4?
See if you get any error in /var/log/syslog after the "started Getty on TTY4" line.

And do check out /var/log/Xor.0.log for errors too.

On a side note: You can set the Ctrl, Alt, Backspace to kill X11, effectively getting you a login console with lightdm.

The problem doesn't occur if I'm not logged. I have to be logged in either E16 or E24.
And few seconds after I hitted ctrl+alt+F4 the screen become garbled and I seem to stay in the X console (ctrl+alt+F7). And I can't go out of that console even if I retry with ctrl+alt+F4 or another console.

I found these messages in /var/log/syslog that seems related to the problem

Oct 6 16:32:40 localhost systemd[1]: Condition check resulted in getty on tty2-tty6 if dbus and logind are not available being skipped.
Oct 6 16:32:40 localhost systemd[1]: closestalledprocesses.service: Found left-over process 22799 (sleep) in control group while starting unit. Ignoring.
Oct 6 16:32:40 localhost systemd[1]: This usually indicates unclean termination of a previous run, or service implementation deficiencies.

I have error messages in my .xsession-errors but I can't be sure they are related.

I'm pasting the interesting part here (the hole file is a longer):

X I/O Error - fatal. Exiting

I'm totally puzzled.

Regards,
BT

I'm not too sure what's happening there either, maybe @Thanatermesis has some idea of what's going on there.

It looks like your laptop is reacting to Getty as if it's having the laptop lid closed i.e it goes into suspend/sleep. So maybe try changing a few settings there ..... considering this is happening in E16 as well as in E24: See if there's a firmware/BIOS setting in regard to "lidclose" or "suspend".

All in all this shouldn't be happening though.

I was mistaken about E16, it doesn't occurs. Sorry!
I suspect it's about the startups applications. It's not the same with E16 and E24.
I'm not sure if it the culprit could be an application or a service not being started in E24 ???
What should be started for a desktop to be functional normally ? There is stuff in many places that seems to be used to startup programs in E16 and E24 (~/.e/e/autostart, ~/.config/autostart, ~/.e16/startup-applications.list, /etc/xdg/autostart, and e24 application config).
I have to read documentation to find out what should be started and what config file should be used. It's late here (1:35am) and I'm getting confused with this! May be I should stay with E16 to avoid problems ... But I like E24 and find it more modern. Let's sleep on this.

Regards,
BT

Aha!!! That clears up a lot.
I can sort of reproduce now:
Using E24 on F7, and opening getty pulls up the E24 Desktop there. It's not garbled on my machine but unresponsive to left clicks.
A right click brings it back to life, enabling me to log out using the mouse/touchpad.

This definitely looks like an E24 bug.

I've reported the bug to the Enlightenment devs.

:+1: Good! I hope they find a solution soon. I can live with it but it's not optimal.
