3.7.4 (32bit) betatesting experiences

Using 3.0.6 on the same laptop shows no eratic behaviour.
The jumpiness is there in both 32 and 64bit version of 3.7.4 sometimes the e16 menu pops up over the mypaint window (even in fullscreen) so it does have something to do with the focus I suspect.
If I connect a Wacom intuos tablet over USB the behaviour is fine.

And when running live Linux-Lite-4.4 (kernel 4.15) I get the same eratic behaviour.
And on Linux-Lite-3.2 it freezes dead if I use the stylus ..... same with Ubuntu 16.04.
Looks like Elive 3.0 is the last one to behave as it should.

On the helix2 there is no such behaviour with a stylus on the screen.

The following picture is the dmesg output:

Where the Volito is the tablet and the CTF-420 is the screen stylus.
BTW:
The dmesg output has some segfaults with efreet_icon and is something I see on all my machines.
And looking that up on Startpage I stumble upon AbantOS-Elive :smiley14:

Very nice.

This is how it works (as it should) on elive3.0.6

http://triantares.ddns.net/Apps/vokoscreen-wacom.mkv

then we have only 2 options left:

  • drivers problem
  • WM / desktop problem (try it from another WM or e22)

have you tried to google about that? after reading the rest of your reports sounds more like a driver issue, so it should happen to more people

yeah that's EFL, we can ignore this for now since we dont use it, elive future will use its own efl build

Definitely driver problem.
The problem persists in Enlightenment E22 and as already mentioned is also there in Linux-lite 4.4 (xfce) and totally crashes Lite-3.2 (xfce)as well as Ubuntu 16.04 (gnome). Not just using "mypaint" but also in "gimp" and "libreoffice-draw".

I have googled (startpaged :innocent: ) but cannot find anything yet.

My wifes X200 thinkpad (similar wacom screen) does not have this problem using Ubuntu 1604 (kernel 4.4) and wacom shows up in dmesg as the same input device as on the X61.

Nor does it (x200) have any problems running Elive3.7.4-686 so it makes me wonder what specific hardware it is that isn't working right anymore.....as it runs fine in Elive-3.0.6

At least it's clear that it is vey hardware speific and running Elive3.0 on it isn't exactly a problem :rofl2: as I was planning to only use it as a drawing tablet .
I'll try and see if I can get newer versions of mypaint working on it, though.

The thing I do notice in 3.0 is that "xinput --list devices" shows a 3rd entry as "Serial Wacom Touch" which the newer versions do not....i.e they have only eraser and stylus
Will get to work on that later.

Hi everybody,

After one week working daily with 3.7.4-32 and today with 3.0.6 here are my first impressions.

The laptop was an Acer Aspire 5310, year 2007, intel Celeron M 1,6 Ghz 533 Mhz FSB 1 Mb L2 cache, 1 GB RAM, intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 with RAM taken from main RAM, 15,4" screen

Partitioned for 3.0.6 / 3.7.4-32 / 3.7.6-64 / my work documents + a 5 GB Swap partition. ext4 filesystem for all 32 bit OS + documents (the installer suggest to use reiserfs but is not proposed while system is installing, a bug?)

Both 3.7.4-32 and 3.0.6 are "out of the box", no time to install paquets necessaries to perform the same test with same boundary conditions, that lets also simulate a non experienced user that doesn't know synaptic. But both with apug ran some times.

3.7.4 rans at the same time.

  • Chromium with 11 opened tabs (one of them was protonmail that usually runs very slow at my laptops and other was accuradio playing music)

  • Sylpheed with a Gmail account

  • Telegram desktop

  • Gnumeric with my jobseeker sheet (other times was Libreoffice without difference in performances)

  • A 15 MB pdf file with document viewer

  • A Thunar window with 2 tabs opened.

  • System monitor

With this conditions systems turns always at 900-925 MB RAM and between 1-1,5 GB swap, but experience is almost fluide (not a race car, but never unresponsive and some times lags between apps changed of 20-30 seconds, very acceptable in this system) With less of this conditions my 2 precedents Linux (Bodhi and Antix) were unresponsive a lot of times.

Now I write from 3.0.6, by unknown reasons Chromium doesn't open any page, I reinstalled it, no works, I uninstalled it then reinstalled it, and still doesn't works, so I perform my test with Opera that doesn't play accuradio because Flash is not the good one...

So, in 3.0.6 I have actually:

  • Opera with Telegram desktop integrated and 7 tabs opened (including protonmail and LinkedIn)

  • NONE E-MAIL CLIENT OPEN

  • Libreoffice with my usual jobseeker sheet (the same)

  • A 15 MB pdf file (the same) with document viewer

  • A Thunar window with ONLY 1 tab open.

  • System monitor

Even if system monitor shows me that I'm only using 600 MB RAM + 600 MB swap (versus 925 MB RAM + 1,5 GB swap) user experience is slower than 3.7.4-32

Really I should compare both with same applications opened, but I had no time to get the same config in both OS.

3.7.4-32 has no major issue, no hung, and no fatal crashed, only small issues without importance at this stade of developpemet from DE like:

  • System monitor doesn't came back to is original size window after maximize window

  • Gnumeric buttons and menus are invisible until the mouse doesn't pass over them, in LibreOffice no issue.

  • For laptop battery the power statistics doesn't work (from Cairo applet)

  • And still some windows oversize, solved moving them with Ctrl+Alt+Arrows and resize them, one time do that, window seems to keep the size designed at least until system reboot.

  • Chromium seems to be faster (in this laptop) as Opera, but I can't really still compare both together (Chromium in 3.7.4 and Opera in 3.0.6, I should discover why Chromium doesn't work in 3.0.6 and install Opera in 3.7.4)

  • As enemy of GAFA companies I don't like to sync to G account in chromium to save and move config from different PCs but I don't know if we can avoid it, its so I prefered Opera to Chromium, even if Chromium seems faster (with 11 tabs opened accuradio's songs doesn't cut).... I also put always DuckDuckGo as default search engine in all my browsers

I have an issue in 3.0.6 (the same from some months ago, but in another laptop) that makes that session ends and log out while I was trying to reinstall Chromium from Synaptics, this issue arrived two times in the same conditions, so I finally opened synaptic, uninstall Chromium, and then install it again, doing that, session doesn't close and doesn't log out like in a reinstalling Chromium from Synaptic did.....

If I have some time I'll try to install Opera in 3.7.4 this weekend, and Gnumeric in 3.0.6 and try to make Chromium works in 3.0.6 to perform the SAME test between 3.0.6 and 3.7.4

In 3.7.4 no difference between Gnumeric and Libreoffice Calc, both had same speed.

Next week I'll park the Acer and use all week the HP with also 1 GB RAM but with an Atom 2600 N quad core.

My resume is that 3.7.4 is in a very good way, rock solid, fast as 3.0.6 is or even feels faster and more responsive in this laptop (dont forget we compare app versions between debian 7 vs debian 10, I suppose buster versions are bigger and heavier than wheezy ones, so is a great goal have a 3.7.4 as faster as 3.0.6 or even faster, because if system monitor shows that RAM and swap use are twice in 3.7.4 compare to 3.0.6 user experience in my laptop are a little faster in 3.7.4 than in 3.0.6)

Hoping this first impressions can help you @Thanatermesis, please let me know if you want to perform some particular test.

Acer Aspire 5310, Celeron M 1,6 Ghz,1 GB RAM > shared memory:
5 GB Swap is a good idea indeed (if you would have a SSD, you don't need to upgrade the RAM, but of course this would have a much better effect)

= Respect, you seem to to be very adventurous:
Chromium with 11 opened tabs = means already uses virtual memory here;
"900-925 MB RAM and between 1-1,5 GB swap"

but very interesting test,
appreciated, thank you!

I'll upload later some screen captures

But it really works, and works fine (for was I always knew in this slow laptop), really amazing, I promises you!

Yes 3.7.4 / 32 bits really gaved my Small SLow HP , 2 GB Ram, a 2nd life
I started using and carry it around instead of my fast "HEavy / large" fast Dell laptop.

Elive, 3.7.4 32 Bits a a winner OS and will be very popular

(thanks to enabled swap ) :omgomgomg:

Now I'm trying from 5:30 AM  in a Saturday  a web browser in 3.7.4-32 called Vivaldi:

I discover it by hazard but it seems very interesting for both 32 and 64 bit flavours of Elive, focused in privacy, import configs from Firefox and Chrome, and has a lot of tricks like a split window:

And for fortunates like @yoda with big screens even split in 4 windows (don't try to split in 4 in my 10" screen laptop in HP Mini :smiley14:slight_smile:

I'll try this weekend to see how fast / slow is because as Opera is not more 32 bit supported I looks an alternative to Chromium, I prefer to give Google as less as money as possible, and all our data that they collected are money for them. No company supports Elive so I try not support GAFA companies if possible.

I'll write here my impressions after this week-end (I'll install it if possible also in 3.0.6 to compare, and also in my two slow laptops) and if necessary also in the dedicated web browser topic that was somewhere in the forum. :typing::work:

I never gaved a shot a Vivaldi.
I tired, chrome, chromium, Opera, Brave but never vivaldi...

Looking forward your feedback, and I will take some time to try it this month

Yes the split screen feature is cool... Would be cool on my 32 inches Viewsonic screen

It's nice but it seems heavy and slow for 1 GB RAM machine.... :worried:

I continue to test it anyway....

Debian 10 released Buster becomes Debian Stable
https://distrowatch.com/?newsid=10602

Official Release was announced for 5th July so is normal.

BTW, some time ago I used Midori Web browser in Antix and it was very fast and light, but also very unstable, I'll take a look to see how it goes now but I think it's necessary to compile it because I think there isn't a deb package...

Ya, Midori was sweet, but has also many restrictions.
Nowadays Chromium does the job, also on weak machines

By the way
As we are talking about weak machines here,
I read somewhere that one of us (@Franc ?)
is dealing with VLC....
well smplayer is the better choice
even on the HP Mini 2133 it plays all videos very well - VLC not (!)

Yes, I'm trying now both Vivaldi and Midori, Midori is really light, but it's main inconvenience is that it is't capable to manage / import bookmarks and passwords from other browsers.... :frowning:
Thanks for the trick of SMPLAYER, I'll try it because in my slow HP VLC doesn't run very well...

I.e.: Vivaldi isn't able to play music from accuradio.com even if flash player is installed and running and Midori is.....

I read that there are some ways to manage / import bookmarks and password at Midori, like Keepassx, I'll try to investigate them....

And I agree, SMPLAYER plays videos very smooth in low ressources machines, I tested it and it runs well even in full screen where VLC frozen... thanks @Rebel450 and I suggest @Thanatermesis to include SMPLAYER as default video player in Elive 32

I didn't know SMplayer. it's " good looking ", meaning the interface fit with ELive e16 look

I like it

I did't know too, we must thank to @Rebel450
