I installed and launched Enlightenment (supposedly e27 but there's no topic tag for that???), and after its initial setup dialogs, it settled in to the new Elive desktop. Except that my top monitor was completely blank (it might have been on the "right" but I don't remember right now). It's supposed to be set up like this:
I could find NO Elive or Enlightenment menu item that deals with this except for the "screens" dialog. THAT dialog only had my LVDS-1 (or LVDS1) monitor showing at all, and no visible control to add the VGA-1 (or VGA1 or VGA-2 or VGA2) monitor to the configuration.
I fired up a terminal and ran the xrandr command and could see that my second monitor indeed was there, was connected, and so I ran my usual command to fix the monitors:
Quite interestingly, it APPEARED to work -- but only briefly (the terminal window and such showed up in the top monitor as it is wont to do when the command is run) but then reverted to the initial display. SHEESH!
I can't use e27 or e24 or whatever it is Enlightenment to do much else with that kind of mess.
There also seemed to be some residual effects of being in e27 when I returned to e16. For example, when I opened a text file with mousepad or SciTE, they opened in the upper monitor. Their previous/preferred window positioning had been "forgotten".
E27 works very differently to other desktops or managers and you need to search or simply click and find out.
You are expecting it to function in the way you have gotten a habit of doing and does not apply any more. Result: Panic!
Take it easy and take your time to explore and just be assured that E27 has more stuff covered than you can think of ..... albeit, I'll give you that, they're not always easy to find.
Maybe, but I really don't like it fighting me, like the way it undoes my xrandr setup.
I don't suppose you would be so kind as to point me to where I can "explore" in the menu to find the magic sauce to get my monitors setup done? Sorry, but with the theming as it is currently, I'm having a hard time just reading the stuff in the menus. There's so little contrast that things really escape notice. On the positive side, the menus don't do the "jumping around" I had complained about in e16.
Just click top left in the widget there on the monitorLDVS1 and you'll see it expand to include the other monitor.
Frankly I'm getting a bit fed up pointing or showing you where to find things because they don't show up where you're used to, or expecting to find them.
I totally agree that Enlightenment settings are hard to navigate and some are even hidden in the most exotic places but ultimately there's far more to configure than most WMs offer.
You just have to find them.....consider it a journey.
Whoa, sorry to be so demanding and tiring. But consider this -- I'm not a novice user and am (or at least think I am) trying to be helpful and hoping to improve the Elive experience for others. So maybe Elive is not for the world, but for E-litists only, mmmm?
That being said, I'm happy to wander back into the shadows and continue to poke around. And maybe someday understand. But maybe not.
BTW -- I really, really do appreciate all that you and @Thanatermesis have done to create this crazy cool, if impenetrable, distro!
There's 2-3 different ways to configure the screens...
use xrand
use arandr (or the frontend made by elive, which shows up in the applications menus)
use the native E27 screens configurator
NOW, IMPORTANT: something important to know: by default only the third option is valid (native E27 configurator), if you try to configure it with another tool it may not work, or the native-configurator may try to put back its defined settings on it.
We should make some betatestings about these multiple things in order to see all the possibilities and compatibilities
Elive has not yet decided which tool to use by default: so the friendlier may be the one from the applications menus, but the native one should be the correct since it can include better features, triggers, autodetections, etc...
BTW: I just wrote this to help the reporting of bugs of Enlightenment and to have a more stable and featured desktop ready sooner!
No, you're clearly not but apparently not experienced enough to see that quite a few of your 'bugs' turn out to be PEBCAK.
You tend to be hampered by your experience, in the sense that you aren't really open to the fact that things might differ to what you're used to and .... then tend to get dismissive and expect others (like in the case of the e16/e27-settings or tint2-settings-gui) to show you how and what.
Short of throwing the (probably non-existent ) manual at you, we do try to weed out what is relevant for the beta (which the Trixie upgrade and E27 still are on Elive) testing, but it does get rather tiring after a while to be addressing unchecked assumptions or biased habits that are easily avoided.
Your input and bug reports are certainly appreciated and can help to make the Elive desktop experience better, despite some cruft here and there.
