3.7.1 betatesting experiences

new wallpapers included, and extra themes available from the menus, mmh, maybe cannot be better than that

for those who never seen Elive Gem 1.0:

yes, compilation failed (or the module to load was not valid for your cards)

your screenshots show a successful removing of the drivers (that last part only)

it should be "true" in your case (so, detected), thats my case, with info too:

❯❯❯ sudo nvidia-privative-drivers-install -d
I: No nvidia graphic cards found on this machine
❯❯❯ echo $?
1

I will need to test on my computer connecting the nvidia card to see if works here

anybody else having problems installing the nvidia drivers?

BTW: i had a computer in computer in which required these versions of drivers which also fails, will need to investigate this...

same version of the nvidia suggested driver?

This can be caused by multiple things, we will need to know which steps are doing (like scanning disks maybe, or stuck trying to get internet access, or updating packages)

try:

sudo su
export EL_DEBUG=3
eliveinstaller

will show you more info, maybe there's useful one saying what is doing on that moment

yep, just a small bug for this preselected checkbox  , fixed it for next build

this was caused by the bug that i still need to fix about the users permission:

sudo chown "$USER:$USER" .config/elive

will need to remember to fix it for 3.7.2 before building it

lol you have hard with this issue... basically if you create a new user it should work with it (that's easy to verify), on such case, just copy the /etc/sudoers.d/ files created to your default user (changing the username inside them), and make sure you sudo chmod 0440 the files after

as said, I have seen this issue one time, but i need to know what is doing  let me note that too...

already implemented in 3.7.1, if im not wrong

oh, i know that, it is not so well supported nor in e17 nor in e22, e16 uses brigthnessctl command instead and thats why it works

but that depends... on e16 brightness works good, e17 is buggy, and e22 uncomplete / not-integrated

maybe we need to explain this in a more clear way ? more? already messages in console / ncurses dialogs + destkop startup messages (only e17)

sounds good but not yet, let's finish 3.7.2 and (maybe) 3.7.3 as a more stable / tested / nonbuggy result

updates almost finished on the installer:

  • fully supports UEFI & gpt & EFI partitions & other systems in UEFI bla bla (a good amount of tests i still need to do for thew new implementation)
  • automatic detection and selection of efi partition (or asking if multiple ones are found)
  • options EFI and BIOS are selectable now when adding extra partitions (so you can select & create an EFI or BIOS partition if needed)
  • no need to care, the installer always tell you if you need any of these
  • some sanity checks and suggestions for which setup you need to use

Yes ! Ready to try..
Will try with Windows ( 2 partition on same disk) and also with another Linux distro ( 2 disks)

I think the position of the Virtual Desktop " Pager" is not save between reboot
and the position of my Epplets.
At least it was not at last reboot... But will retry when I have a minute

Nice!
let me first make a few tests here just to make sure that the installer works as expected, in what i see from my tests, (and build/upload 3.7.2, which also requires other bugfixes)

installer updates:

  • also added a "progress" window in the early launch to avoid the "unknown waiting" feeling

yeah this is very possible, i have see strange behaviours with the sizes and positionings of elements  but specially if you change your resolutions. I think that something could be improved in e16 about that...

How: try to be able to reproduce the problem with simple steps, so i can report the issue to the dev to see if he can improve these sizings/positionings behaviours in e16

@triantares is right here, at least a simple progress bar should be present til the installer has completed (or failed)
An average user will be irritated by the lack of information -
"what is going on ? still working, huh ? mhmm let me better reboot...?"

Especially, as discussed before, when it comes to run on a dual boot machine
= the pure fear

Commencing install on my lenovo ideapad. Win bootloaders are presenton sda, Win itself is removed ror Elive. Ext4 partition on sda7 shows several bad blocks so might pose problems for booting.

Using my protonmail address for sending bugs and commencing 11.40 local time (brussels)

Set BIOS to UEFI and of course USB disk wont boot ........ duh!!!!!! My bad...reset to legacy to boot.

Done that. Is definetely the internet connection. Can be resolved by making the user connect the internet before starting the installer. With connection it's much much faster.

Carrying on I get the partitioner and opt for 2 Reiser4 partitions. Once choosing / partition, installer wants to have a >250 Mb boot partition ...... but actually that's allready there. See Pics of content existing partitions and the selection window.
Me I stop right there as maybe @Thanatermesis wants to see the contents of those partitions first.
Considering sda3 as not so important (who wants Win anayway? :face_vomiting:) I will use tht for the this install, there will definitely be more to come. :excited:

And the contents

BTW: The 2, hard to read yellow blocks say resp. Recovery and 'System Volume Information'

Strange thing, during installation "moving atoms at speed of light" I get a second widget asking me to choose a partition again. I close it and then tells me I've exited the installer though package management continues in the open console. (picture taken of the console NOT of the 2 concurrent widgets)

Note self: Do not check "Opera" at install, it's 67 Mb and hogs my precious mobile cap.

And the install ends on the console tho no widget telling met to reboot and enjoy my new system. I'll just reboot, heh.

It will NOT, E16 cannot close my multiple open (sudo)terminals. Back to TTY1 and the 3 fingered salute.
No boot, with: "error: no such device 682..my UUID.."
"error: unknown filesystem"

This is a job for Grub2 rescueDisk, :sniff:

OR: I enable UEFI and lo and behold, I get my Ubuntu GRUB back. Including now non-existing "Loki" and "Windows" and "system setup" (I like that one, it hops into the BIOS)
Booting ubuntu and mounting /dev/sda3 shows the files installed by elive_installer. So that went OK.
Keeping all as is, in case @Thanatermesis wants to see some of the content.
EOF (for now)

@Thanatermesis
I am familiar and like e16 keyedit

but as for the mouse middle button I need to use to resize window ( + Super key), I can't find where I can change that... Mine is a Wheel and not pleasant to push... WOuld prefer mouse right button

added for the start of the installer, i will need to investigate more for the "end of installer" (closing processes, message "already running")

@triantares the UEFI (any/full) support is not included in versions below 3.7.2, you need to wait the next build

im confused, yes the installer may want to you add a boot partition, yourself (manually), you cannot use the /boot of another system (like ubuntu), mmh where is the problem? you mean you already added the /boot partition in the installer and is asking it again?

better if you wait for 3.7.2 and the full uefi support and the correct integration of the bootloaders and stuff  IMHO

 its asking twice for the same (root?) partition? or for an (optional) extra one?

well, im reworking in the grub stuff / bootloaders entirely, big rewrites in the installer, should be much better supported in 3.7.2 (you can leave the computer like that if you don't need it, waiting for 3.7.2 to fix the boots too)

Opera topic: in a fast test I noticed (new) opera to require more resources than chrome (chromium), so by default the (only) browser included is chromium now, any feedback about opera being a better option for those versions? (/me looks at @yoda)

you cannot configure everything from that tool if im not wrong, you must edit .e16/bindings.cfg yourself (and ctrl + alt + end to reload), mmh maybe i need to add a few comments on that file so that the user can know what means each thing

installer notes:

just to remember: im rewriting parts of the installer to fully suport efi, but even if you update it you need the 3.7.2 build that has uefi boot support included, tests about the installer must be better done from 3.7.2 to know that everything is working correctly. I have actually mostly finished it and im now doing tests with it (finally able to dualboot with Win in efi wohooo, next tests of combinations / oses today  )

if you know which one ( I read the list 10 times LOL) is Mouse middle button + SUprt key to resize window, let me know

Aclass BUTTONBINDINGS normal
MouseDown CA 1 wop * mo ptr
MouseDown 4 1 wop * mo ptr
MouseDown SA 1 wop * swapmove
.... [cut] ...

I'm not sure there but I think the optional one.

No I hadn't added a boot partition but there were already boot partitions there as the pics show.

On trying to boot Elive using Grub2RescueDisk I get complaints about wrong signature.

Then there would be no point to alpha testing you mean? :omfg:

confirmed
Epplet Desktop config, Virtual Desktop Pager config not saves between reboot

Will be the same problem like we had lately with the startup sound.
Just try to correct the permissions the same way (?)

@Thanatermesis:
Can you not debug 'ubiquity' -
for that you can "read" alongside what it is doing
during the partioning process?

Don't slap me, just an idea... :zipper_mouth_face:
