3.7.6 betatesting experiences

I stopped reading further here.....

(google for fat32 limitations)

false alarm

It was a USB stick problem

exactly
actually i think that it is pretty ready, except for the status for the nvidia drivers support

i never seen this bug, but try to isolate it:

  • it happens with non-hidden networks ?
  • it happens in differents computer?

in fact it is "mimeapps.list" and not "defaults.list", the second one seems like deprecated now, i think that was useful to have in wheezy

this works, for example for pdf files, but i noticed that it doesn't for .avi files, seems like im unable to change the vlc one to another. What is the file type you cannot change ? oh i see... the .avi file too

the issue seems to be VLC, uninstalling it allows you to select another one

I will wait for the benchmark results of the comparison between media players before to decide what to do with vlc

usb sticks can be really really slow... make sure to use an enough fast one (like sandisk ultra)

My previous issues with multiple pointing devices is now resolved.
I have tested several hours with no real issues.
Annoyances:

  • Debian does not allow for Swedish formatting and English language. :frowning:
  • Forward and back mouse buttons doe not seem to be hooked in at all :frowning:
  • Some sound files were missing in one theme.

More to come

@Hammer459:
Tack så mycket!
Thank you for report, appreciated!
Looking forward to your more advanced report
and also to your recommendations, so far you can advise.
(By knowing that you have your own 'e' project still in your drawer, am curious about your next post )

I assume that you mean e16 / the first theme from top of the drop down menu (forgotten the name right now) ?
If so, this bug is known and will be solved by @Thanatermesis in the near future...

Kdrgds!

mouse issues on X1 thinkpad

Still having intermittent problems with the touchpad not loading after sleep/hibernation on 3.7.6 on my carbonX1 thinkpad.
Keyboard and touchscreen work fine only trackpoint and touchpad do not.
I resolve this by unloading and reloading the psmouse module:
"sudo modprobe -r psmouse & sudo modprobe psmouse"
but this shouldn't be happening.
I have the feeling it happens more often if I come from the lightdm login but as I cannot replicate at will, I'm not sure.

On top, turning off the touchpad while typing does not work properly. It does leave, for a short moment an unresponsive mouse after typing but ...... while typing stuff like this entry, I have to be extremely careful to not touch the touchpad with my palm.
It's a real PITA to find you have been typing stuff in the strangest of places. :weary:

(I guess that dbus felt asleep and was missed to get invoked - methinks...... ??)

Ehmmm, just reporting bugs, not looking for solutions or causes.
I gather from searching that it's not specifically Elive related but does require a solution.

elive includes a feature for that, check the configurators for the touchpad configurator of elive  , enable both first ones about that, with a time of 0.9 seconds

thats fixed, but some e16 themes has no sounds, we dont have the errors appearing anymore

@triantares about the suspend / hibernation you should try to install "enlightenment" to see if the issue is only from e16 or from any WM (or if is a hardware specific issue), if i is e16 we should not care much (but we can still report it)

Yep that was the "feature" I was talking about. Somehow it doesn't seem to work all the time --- or my pauses typing may be too long.

IIRC it was also the case in enlightenment (the mouse issue, to be clear) but I'll give it a go again.
It happens on other laptops, with touchpad and touchscreen, so not machine specific.
Like I said: Me, I can live with it, as long as the keyboard works. F12 (or ALT,CTRL,F1 for a TTY) to open guake and then the modprobe commands.

It's about stabilizing the system.
BTW:
Inserting a USB mouse isn't a solution either. Doesn't work until the "modprobe psmouse"

A few more notes.

  • I installed on a box where the root disk has some bad blocks. After rewriting the entire disk to verify the installation started a new installer that obviously conflicted with the first... Now this should likely not be a common issue and after killing both I could start over and successfully install.
  • When using GParted to format disks in the install process, after formatting the disk with Ext4 the installer formats the disk with Ext4....
  • When resizing menus in E only the icons can be changed. On my 28" 4K monitor the menu text is tiny

On the positive side.

  • No unexpected runtime errors.
  • Less than 1GB of memory usage typically (why the h--l do I have 16  )

Nice to haves.

  • Hide boot messages by default.
  • Simplify install by letting you select bigger blocks of features
    • Office
    • development
    • Additional languages
    • etc
  • Hide the console window in installation and show progress bar.

@Hammer459
Thank you for report and your suggestions, appreciated.
Will be considered

I had this impression too though at the time I wasn't sure if it is wasn't check.

I betcha there's a file that configures font and size somewhere for e16 but I haven't found it yet. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Not a bad idea at all IMO. Including a minimal install option.

Progressions that big tend to take a long, so me I prefer to have a console visible. Nothing worse than a progress bars that doesn;t seem to progress. :ohmygod::ohmygod:

Folding up details into progress bar is a Good Thing (tm) assuming that you provide means of showing detail. The average user tends to get all worked up if there is an error or a warning wizzing by (even if it isn't a concern in the context)

Install on my minimum spec laptop works very well and found no new issues. It even handles streaming encrypted video without delays.

Setting aside whether there are any average users on Elive: :omgomgomg:

How long do you look at a progress bar that doesn't seem to move, before you hit the power button .... or at best, go to a virtual terminal to see what's going on?
An additional active terminal, even if it is with error messages at least shows the process is still alive and churning on.

For the same reason I always add "status=progress" to the "dd" command, if it's a big file.

A brand new issue...
I just noticed that I get several "Shacking warning" (presumably meaning shaking) on the level of several G's. On my big tower computer.... And no registered earthquakes the last few years

Next little issue.
So far a one off...
Had a half tera byte disk connected via USB3
When trying to unmount I had one open shell with cwd to that disk. after exiting that shell the unmount hung forever. I mean forever, as in could not even shut down :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

@Thanatermesis ?

A humble request
On most distros the file manager has a left button menu choice Delete that immediately deletes a file instead of going through wastebin. Kind of nice to have, especially on deletes on a removable disk.
